<ANTIQUE Arm Chair REPAIR UPHOLSTERY>
Antique armchair frame adjustment and seat reupholstery repair

What we would like to introduce this time is a memorable armchair that was the starting point of the customer couple's antique collecting.

The frame is decorated with a beautiful botanical carved relief, making this a chair that is sure to captivate the hearts of both you and your partner.

But even this quaint, beloved armchair had developed a number of problems due to the inevitable deterioration that comes with antique furniture: a warped frame, loss of color and luster, wobbly casters, and a sagging seat.

――BEFORE 一見状態の良いアンティークアームチェアですが、腰かけてみると底が抜けている様に沈み込んでしまう。座面のスプリングを支えるウェービングテープが千切れてしまっていました。

As you can see, the hemp tape on the bottom of the seat has fallen off, exposing the spring.

It appears to have been reupholstered recently, but only the outer fabric was changed; the essential springs were left untouched. You can feel the passion of the craftsmen at the time in this armchair, which has survived to this day in its original condition.

The base of the left arm must have come loose at some point in the past. It's fixed with a resin adhesive similar to wood glue, not with animal glue. The finish is not great, and the adhesive has overflowed from the joint and solidified.

This adhesive must also be carefully removed and the joint re-glued with new glue.

The arm on the right had not been modified during the time shown above, but due to deterioration over time the glue has come loose and it has become so loose that you can see through to the background.

Here too, the joint surface needs to be cleaned and re-fixed with glue.

The photo below shows the cushion being removed from the armrest, which gives us an idea of the character of the craftsman who reupholstered it in recent years.

As you can see, when it was first made, it was probably covered in rose red fabric. A new covering was added on top of the existing fabric, presumably to add volume.

By removing all the fabric, countless holes become visible. These are nail holes from the manufacturing process and holes from riveting added in recent years.

Judging from the shape of these holes and the width of the frame, it is likely that when it was manufactured it was finished with decorative trim rather than riveting.

The frame is made to accommodate fabric decorative trim, so using thick riveting such as with nails will cause more damage than necessary to the frame. This is a very important consideration when repairing antique furniture, but careless work will result in cracks and scratches.

We remove the existing fabric and check the overall condition of the product in detail. We check for overall loss of color and luster, unnatural aging marks, holes caused by rivets, cracks in the frame, etc.

What was particularly troubling was this lump of black stain.

It was probably a dirty process to create shading, but the finish was quite rough and the color was dull, far from shiny.

The request this time was to repolish the chair to correct the unnatural shadows and colors, rebuild the joints that had been haphazardly glued together and tighten the loose frame, replace the old, wobbly casters with British-made solid brass casters, weave the seat, reupholster the springs and replace the internal cushions, and change the upholstery from the riveted decoration to one with imported fabric and trim. There were a ton of problems to solve.

The fabric we used for this reupholstery is Backhausen , a leading Austrian fabric brand.

The beautifully lustrous and firm fabric is adorned with imported trim provided by the customer.

It balances well with the chair, and the contrast between the reddish rosewood and the bright yellow is beautiful.

The armchair that holds their fond memories will never fade and will continue to beautifully color their lives.
