Point ① Antique furniture maintenance
普段のお手入れは、綿布で木目に沿った乾拭きが原則。
水拭きは家具の劣化を早めます。
As the saying goes, "Trees breathe."
Even after being sawn, wood expands and contracts depending on the environment.
To mitigate these changes and protect the furniture from drying out, a protective coating is applied to the surface.
Applying oil wax once every 1-2 months will keep the item looking beautiful.

French polish = sustained value, antique color and luster, long life. Weak against heat, water and alcohol.
- Urethane coating = Excellent heat and water resistance, can withstand heavy use. Short lifespan, lacks color, luster and texture. French polish = Maintains value, unique antique color, long lifespan. Weak against heat, water and alcohol.
The lifespan of urethane paint used on typical furniture is said to be 5 to 7 years.
On the other hand, shellac varnish used in the "French Polish" paint for antique furniture has been around for half a century to a century.
With regular maintenance, the effect will last almost permanently (until it decays).
However, in modern times, the paint on antique furniture does not necessarily have to be French polished.
The painting method required will vary depending on the intended use of the customer, the current owner.
POINT ② Types of paint used on antique furniture
SUITABLE to your STYLE
Shellac, an essential ingredient in antique furniture, is a traditional alcohol varnish that has been around since the 16th century, made by dissolving a substance produced by a certain insect in alcohol.
Since it is a natural substance, it is used as food coating, nail paint, etc.
It is also famous as a paint to prevent house sickness.
This shellac varnish is applied to fabric and then layered on top of it, called French polish (also called tampo rub in Japan).
Each process only produces a very thin film, so the paint must be applied over and over again, and drying and sanding processes are required between coats, making this a very time-consuming and labor-intensive painting method for furniture repair.
All furniture that can be classified as antique furniture is made with this paint.
Its unique texture and alluring, beautiful luster give it a special appeal not found in modern paints.

Repair: REPAIR
Fix functional issues like a door coming off, a worn-out table top, a wobbly chair, or a drawer that won't open.
It means finishing the piece neatly without compromising the balance and creating a natural look.
The materials and methods used for the repair are not very important, so the price is low and the work period is short. General furniture repair falls into this category.
Repair = The process of fixing something that is broken and unusable, regardless of the materials or techniques used, so that it can be used as a tool.
Antique furniture, by its very nature, is designed and constructed to be repaired, restored and used for a long time.
Partial repairs and restorations (such as a heavily damaged tabletop) are cheaper than the total cost and take less time.
For items like antique furniture, which are expensive to repair, it is best to repair them little by little.
When carrying out restoration work , we try to recreate as many items as possible that were used at the time, in keeping with the era of the furniture in question.
This will be more expensive than typical furniture repairs, but it will not reduce the value of your antique furniture.
When it comes to repair work , we decide on the materials and process according to the customer's needs, and we do it without upsetting the overall balance and creating a natural look.
Since the purpose is to provide a finishing touch, it is cheaper and quicker to complete than restoration work.
POINT ③ Difference between furniture repair and furniture restoration
REPAIR or RESTORATION
Restoration = The process of restoring something broken to exactly the same condition as it was originally, using the same materials and techniques.
Restoration: RESTORATION
Mainly paintings, cultural properties, antique furniture, etc., without compromising the texture such as scratches, fading, luster, etc. that have developed over a long period of time.
It means reproducing the materials used at the time as much as possible and restoring the item to its original condition using the same methods and techniques.
This is a term used by many antique dealers in Japan, but in reality there are only a handful of businesses that can restore furniture.
