The request this time was for a paulownia chest of drawers that the wife had received from her mother when she got married.
The way it has been carefully used is truly beautiful, with a dignified serenity and an enveloping gentleness.
Because of its beauty, I was puzzled as to how much I should change in this remake.
We believe that remaking means "being close to the object and the people who created it."
What we would like to introduce to you now is a new remake story that connects these things, people, and the future.

Now that their children have become independent, and they have moved, they would like to continue using the paulownia chest of drawers as a tool that suits their lifestyle as a couple.
The first thing that came to mind for a remake was a Western-style TV stand that would fit perfectly into a modern space.
While taking advantage of the unique design of the paulownia chest of drawers, the whetstone finish is washed off and a new coat of paint is applied. This is the "French Polish" that only Listory can do, an antique paint finish that absorbs the light in the space and gives off a unique shine.
The dignified beauty is enhanced with warm natural paint to create a dignified atmosphere.
The four parts of the two-spoke paulownia chest of drawers, excluding the double doors, will be lined up side by side to become the focal point of the living room of the new house.
We will transform a paulownia chest of drawers, the epitome of Japanese style, into a one-of-a-kind piece using Western ideas and designs .

Simply placing the four parts side by side would result in a 3cm gap and misalignment of the drawers.
This results in a "rounded corner and a right angle next to each other," which makes the design look uneven and unnatural.
In order to design the shape as a TV stand, we will solve these three problems through wood processing.

Removal of existing decorations
CHAPTER ONE
First, we began by removing the existing decorations in order to remove the "Japanese" look and imagine a "Western" appearance.
The central design element of the Japanese furniture, the paulownia chest of drawers, is the metal fittings.
The simple box-shaped furniture, shining brass decorations, and the family crest carved into the keyhole add to its charm.
The surface of the paulownia wood is soft and easily scratched, so it must be removed carefully.
When you remove it, you can clearly see the marks from the metal fittings, evidence of the age of the item.
Considering the subsequent painting, there would be some uneven coloring in places, so careful preparation of the base was a key point in the early stages.
This remake also has the unique characteristics of antiques.

Shellac varnish is mixed and only natural paints are used.

和家具には当たり前に付いている「引き戸」
スライド式のドアは西洋家具ではあまり見られません。
引き戸用の金具も種類が少なく、発想の転換が必要でした。

CHAPTER THREE
家具に対する塗装は用途・時代によって様々です。
桐箪笥に施す塗装仕上げは砥粉、焼桐、漆、柿渋などが古くからあり、さらに近年のオイルフィニッシュやウレタン塗装など多くの塗装方法で仕上げられています。
リストリーリメイクの特徴は、日本で作られた時代家具やオーダーメイド家具にヨーロッパの伝統塗装技術フレンチポリッシュを加わえる事。
フレンチポリッシュは西洋の漆ともいわれるシェラックを使い、薄く薄く塗膜を重ね、アンティーク家具独特の美しい光の層を作り出します。
「和の木工」+「洋の塗装」異なる文化で培われた技術と技術の調和は他に類をみない、極めて珍しい貴重な作品を生み出します。
今回のリメイクで最もナイスなアイディアは、この「鍵」。
初期段階では、一般的な彫り細工を施し「取っ手」とする予定でした。しかし、西洋家具の開き扉の様な鍵を使って取っ手の代わりにする仕様を取り入れられたら… とても素敵になるのでは？
シンプルなデザインにワンポイントの「キーハンドル」そして、
それを彩る可愛いキータッセル。
もう誰も、これがあの桐箪笥だなんて想像できないでしょう。
