Table Repair - Antique Art Deco Desk

アンティークアールデコデスクのリメイク事例

- BEFORE -

This time, we will introduce an example of remaking an antique desk.

Even though it is called a remake, the existing sculpture relief was scraped off,
This is a minor change to a simple style without any decoration.

There are two bookshelves on the back,
The front side has a drawer attached to a hinged door.
(The title photo above shows the front side.)

This time, the entire building was repainted and the carved relief on the hinged door was scraped off.
It will be reborn as a simple design.

Let's start with the carved relief on the desk's hinged door.

The carved decorations that were originally on all four sides of the hinged door are gradually removed with a plane.

To be honest, I thought it was a real waste...

I will delete it because I'm tired of seeing it, it looks old-fashioned, and it doesn't suit my tastes.

As times change, so do users.

If we take it out of the perspective of historical value,

Antique furniture is passed down and adapted to the era and the user.

It may be something that changes .

Use a paint stripper to remove the paint.

Antique furniture is often painted with a French polish finish using shellac.
Wouldn't it be possible to revive it by scraping off a few layers of the surface?

Some people think this, but in reality most of it is removed with a stripping agent.

There is a restoration method that preserves the patina-like luster of antique items, but
this is only applicable to items in good condition with minimal damage. (It is effective for ring stains on cups that are not deep scratches, scuff marks, and surface deterioration.)

Well.
After the stripping process, any scratches or roughness on the surface are repaired and the surface is repainted.

This time, the base was applied in a slightly darker color that is characteristic of walnut, and then a film of paint was applied using pre-cut lacquer.

The process is repeated many times: blow, scrape, polish, scrape, scrape, blow, blow and polish.

The purpose of this project, " removal of the carved relief on the hinged door ," also disappeared without a trace.
It has been transformed into a modern desk.

By layering again and again,
It increases the refractive index, creating a deep, profound color and luster.

The customer requested a "shiny mirror finish," so we did our best to achieve that.

Italian and Chinese people tend to prefer this finish, but

...I don't have any hobbies at all.
