Restoration of Japanese antique dining tables
5 min
--BEFORE As the name suggests, a shakubukudai is a low table for eating. Over the course of 100 years, this shakubukudai has likely been at the center of family gatherings. It is a memorable item imbued with the family's history and memories.
The photo shows the product upside down, and you can see that the top plate has come off along with the wooden frame.
Rather than simply hammering the protruding pieces back into place, we had to dismantle the entire piece, adjust it, and then reassemble it.
Although the table is about 100 years old, the joinery is beautifully made and it is a masterpiece that embodies the carpentry techniques of the time.
When you touch it, the oil feels moist, so we finish it simply with an oil finish.
First, remove the connection between the tabletop and the legs, then separate them into parts and smooth out the surface.
The furniture from that time was glued together like European furniture, and can be easily disassembled by applying heat or hitting it.
Each disassembled part is carefully planed to remove any dirt or small scratches on the surface.
The smoothing process is very important as it affects the final result. Even just the wooden frame is a painstaking process that takes several days to smooth out. After planing, the surface is sanded with sandpaper until it feels smooth to the touch.
Once the darkened surface is polished, the lustrous grain of the wood will emerge. It has a beautiful finish as is, and even if it is assembled and completed in this state, it will still be beautiful camellia wood. When you touch it, it has a moist texture and you can feel the slight moisture that is unique to camellia. It has a nice scent, and shines lustrously when light hits it.
Once all the parts have been smoothed, they are reassembled and the surface is adjusted again to ensure that even the slightest unevenness is eliminated.

Trim it using grit 120, 180, and 240 in that order until the surface fur is removed, as shown in the photo.
When viewed through a downlight, the beautiful, wavy wood grain stands out.
--Now it's time to start painting. There are roughly four steps to painting with oil stain. Paint, polish, paint, polish, and repeat until you get the right color and luster. It's a simple paint job, but the finish is very beautiful, so it's often used for craft furniture.
It is painted with mixed color oil stain.
As you can clearly see in this photo, the absorption rate of oil stain varies depending on the wood grain.
It contains a mixture of fast-absorbing and slow-absorbing areas, but if you leave it for about 15 minutes, the oil will gradually penetrate the vessels, harden, and become moist and absorbed into your skin.
The excess oil stain that was not absorbed has been wiped off. A deep color and luster has already been achieved.
The color penetrates evenly and thoroughly, and the moist texture unique to oil stain is very beautiful.
Leave it for a day to allow the oil stain to fully set before polishing it further.
Apply oil stain over the top and then sand it down with 400-grit waterproof sandpaper. With 240-grit sandpaper, the surface was a little fuzzy, but that has disappeared and it now feels even smoother.
After a short time, apply oil stain in the same way. Sand with 1200 grit sandpaper and wire wool.
--AFTER The surface rubbed with natural wax has a nice color and luster, and can maintain its beauty forever if properly cared for. If you create a tough coating like urethane paint, you won't be able to enjoy the natural beauty of this wood.
Photographed in the Japanese-style room of the Listry showroom
After nearly 100 years, the Tsubaki table has been reborn in a new and fresh form. The gloss of the oil finish and the flowing, elegant, and vibrant wood grain make this a masterpiece worthy of being one of a kind.
It has a presence that is not inferior to George Nakashima's Conoid Chair, which is considered a representative of Japanese modern style.
