〈ANTIQUE Japanese Table REPAIR WORK〉
時代を繋ぐ家具 和製アンティークテーブル再生修理
5 min
This time we would like to introduce a work desk made in the Taisho era. It is a desk with a long history, having been used by the customer's grandparents. Although the construction is simple, it is made entirely of solid wood, and the design of the wheeled legs gives it a soft look. Its timeless charm gives it a nostalgic and mature calm.
This desk evokes the romanticism of the Taisho period, but it is wobbly enough that it is barely able to stand, and it has many years of scratches, dirt, stains, and even burn marks. As both furniture and a tool, it has survived the ages alongside its predecessors. Its construction is simple, but it is made entirely of solid wood, and the design of the wheeled legs gives it a soft look. Its timeless charm exudes nostalgia and a mature calm.

--BEFORE The client was a young couple who had just started a new life. They wanted to revive this desk, beloved by their predecessor, as a place for the two of them to gather together. That was their wish. Furniture has always lived with people, and will continue to do so in the future.
A large black ink stain penetrates deep into the center of the board. In places, red dye has seeped in and there are also burn marks like those caused by a soldering iron.
It would be best if you could scrape it off, but the dye that has soaked in will not come off completely.
The tabletop is made up of three boards, two of which have completely separated.
The Taisho era was exactly 100 years ago, so in Japan's hot and humid climate, the country has experienced repeated contraction and expansion.
まずは天板を裏から叩いて解体していきます。
膠などの接着剤は使われておらず、全て木組み、釘打ちでの接合ですので比較的簡単に外れます。
The photo on the left shows the underside of the removed top. The black spots are not ink but burn marks.
It's difficult to imagine how this spot became burnt, but I suspect that the burn mark was probably on the wood before it was made into this desk.
Otherwise there's no way it could have been burned, because there's a drawer underneath... and there are no burn marks on the drawer.
By touching the item in this way, you can discover things that you have never noticed before, such as scenes from the past and mysterious things. This is the best part of repairing antiques.
The base of the legs that support the tabletop had split in two, causing the tabletop to wobble excessively.
Because it is a simple design to begin with, if there is one problem it will affect the entire system at once.
Once the cause of the wobble was clearly identified, the gap was fixed with glue and clamps. This time, the idea was that it would be fine if the shape remained as it was and it could be used safely, so we added screws to make sure it was firmly in place.
-- "Please make sure it doesn't wobble even if the cat sits on it." It's a sturdy frame that won't budge even if the cat jumps on it. Of course, you can eat and write on it without any problems. Next, we'll move on to adjusting the top plate.
First I wanted to use a plane to flatten out all the unevenness, but it was more curved than I had imagined, and the plane wouldn't fit.
In an attempt to correct the warping to some extent, I pushed myself to my limits by increasing the humidity and pressing it for nearly a week.
They responded more readily than I expected, and the warping was improved to the point where it no longer interfered with my daily life.
Since I don't know how much warping will occur in the future, I will add reinforcing material to the back and see how it goes.

The countless holes have been filled with putty, and the boards that had been repeatedly warped have been straightened out to a flat state, as you can see.
Left: BEFORE Right: AFTER
Half of the tip of the left rear leg has chipped off . A piece of wood is placed to fit the chipped area, and then glued back together to restore it.
--AFTER Once the top plate adjustment is complete, it is finally painted and finished. This time, as with conventional painting, we will color it with stain and then finish it with an oil finish.
